Chapter 7 Composition

Fundamentals of Composition
Visual Interest and Clarity are the two main goals of composition

Composition- the form, and how all components are arranged together

Margins- blank space surrounding a printed design.  Can add readability, or can even take away from a design.

Static vs. Active Composition

Closed vs. Open

Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical

Illusion of spatial depth- the appearance of 3d space on a flat surface
Picture plane- blank flat surface on which a design will go
Trompe l’oeil- real or representation?
Foreground, middle ground, background
Tilted plane imitating the recession of space
Perspective
Overlapping
Layering and Transparency
Movement
Contrast

Differentiation through grouping

Compositional process

Composing for a single static surface format- consider type and image as a whole

Arranging type and image

Integrating type and image

Arrangement

Guiding the viewer
Transtitions
Continuity
Building compositions
Avoiding ambiguity

Design Project 5- T-Shirt Design

Design Project 4- Activity Alphabet

After I created my alphabet, I worked on my rough, which was originally just made of flat colors and shapes.  After reviewing it the first time, I added many more elements into my design.

Here is my final design.  As with some of my other projects, I lost the digital processes for this one as well, but I was able to take photos of my printed copy.

Design Project 3- Humane Society Ad

I do not have much extra process for this poster because I decided it would be very similar to my first phase of the project.  I wanted to keep it the same, but change the words and the info, and use a different color.

Design Project 2- Turkey Ad

Here is my beginning stages of the project.  My concept thumbnails are included on my brief.

Unfortunately, because of my flash drive crashing, I don't have any of my digital process.  For the most part, my design didn't change too much.  I went through multiple different fonts and color choices until I decided on the right ones.  The final poster turned out as follows.
